Life without a Smartphone Print E-mail
Posted by Winston
Monday, 14 February 2011 06:10

Last month, I've written an article on "Life without internet access" ... It was my own personal experience on a 2 week experiment. I wanted to let everyone know what it was really like, to live life without internet access whatsoever. At the end of the 2 weeks, I realised how difficult it was without internet access, especially when you need it for work. Checking emails is the most critical. Without internet access, important emails would not be answered or replied in a timely fashion ... something which is extremely vital for any business. Without access to Facebook, Twitter or any online chat, your window to the outside world (beyond your circle of friends) will be very limited. You won't be able to have access to news or breaking stories, which in the event of the recent protests in Tunisia and Egypt ... could be a matter of life or death.

This month, as an extension to my latest experiment, I'll be trying to live my life without a smartphone ... for a whole month. Yes, no phone calls, no texting, no more listening to MP3s, watch Youtube videos, and no web browsing or playing around with apps. Can I live without a smartphone it? Is life better off without it?  Boy! this could be the most difficult experiment I've ever undertaken in years. Let's begin with a daily blog ... starting today.

Bobnova's thoughts on SandyBridge, Bulldozer, and CPUs Print E-mail
Posted by Ed Smith
Sunday, 06 February 2011 11:40

It's a slow news day here today, so It's time for a blog post instead of news!  I'll be covering SandyBridge, Bulldozer, cache performance, and a few other things.  Hit Read More to read more.

First off, a little bit on Intel's Sandy Bridge cpus.  One of the things that I didn't like about the first generation of the Core i series was that the bulk of the cache was in L3 (The core2 and earlier CPUs it was L2 running at full core speed), and running at a much slower speed then the core.  What this means is that if the core wants to calculate X times Y minus Z and only X and Y are in L2 cache the CPU has to wait quite a while for Z to arrive from L3.  Worse, if X is in ram rather then cache first it has to go to L3, which takes a long time, and then it has to make it from there to L2 which takes quite a while also.
