Asus ponders over a Windows-based PadFone Print E-mail
Posted by Will Smith

Asus is pondering over whether to make a Windows-based phone so that it can be used for a possible Windows-based PadFone to be released in the future. Sounds all good ... no need to carry multiple devices, right? lol!

"An Asus exec has revealed to the Wall Street Journal that his company is "in talks" with Microsoft to license Windows Phone 8. Talk is cheap, of course, but at this point WP8 is much in need of friends and it's interesting to contemplate what Asus might do with the OS, given that manufacturer's penchant for quirky form factors. Speaking of which, the same executive -- VP Benson Lin -- brought up the notion of a PadFone-style modular device based on Windows: "With our Padfone concept, the phone plus tablet, I think it makes sense for Windows 8"

What doesn't make sense is how such a thing could work. The Android-based PadFone employs the exact same OS regardless of whether it's in phone or tablet mode, but no version of Windows (whether WP8, RT or the regular "8") currently allows that sort of flexibility with screen size. Lin may know something about the future of Windows that we don't, or he may just be throwing out abstract ideas about some sort of dual-OS device -- after all, he admitted that there is "no target timeline" for any of this."

PlayStation 4 could be unveiled in May 2013 Print E-mail

It's coming the Sony Playstation 4 ... and we can't WAIT for it to come out! Sources said that the PlayStation 4 could be unveiled as early as May 2013.

"Sony VP mentioned an E3 announcement, but said a surprise may come in the next few months. After releasing the PlayStation 3 console just over six years ago, it looks like Sony is ready to launch its successor as early as this spring.

Hiroshi Sakamoto, Sony's vice president of home entertainment, recently gave some vague details about when we'll finally see the PlayStation 4 in an interview with Chilean site Emol. According to Sakamoto, the PS4 could make an appearance as early as May of this year.

However, Sony's VP was asked whether the new console could make an earlier entrance within the next few months. "That's still a big secret, but our friends are preparing Sony PlayStation," said Sakamoto in the interview. "I can only say that we are focused on the E3 gaming event, scheduled for June. [An] announcement may be [made] in that minute or even earlier in May."

It is rumored that the PS 4 will have a custom chip based on AMD's A8-3850 with a quad-core 2.9GHz processor and a 1GHz graphics card with 1GB memory."

So why are all the Canadians getting the juicy hardware? Limited editions, white editions ... you name it, they got it!

"It looks like Canada is the next country to snag a white version of the (latest) PS3 Slim, according to a listing on Best Buy. This bundle includes one year of PS Plus and the 500GB white model of the PS3 Slim, running $300 and set to hit the warehouse on January 27.

So far Japan, Europe and Australia have been graced with the white PS3's presence, but it has yet to officially hit US shores. The Japanese, European and Australian white versions were capped at 320GB, however, so it looks like Sony's coloring team is stepping up its game."

LG's Smart Activity Tracker (with video) Print E-mail

The LG Smart Activity Tracker will give extra meaning to your sporty life ... goes hand in hand with fitness app.

"We've seen our fair share of wearable tech here at CES already and LG is looking to cast its hat in the ring as well. A waltz through the company's booth revealed the Smart Activity Tracker: a device that rests comfortably on the wrist, much like the Nike+ FuelBand or the Jawbone UP.

Despite sharing some aesthetic similarities with the former gadget -- like a dotted LED display, USB clasp and soft-touch rubber coating -- LG's model has a few more tricks up its sleeve. First, the Smart Activity Tracker is compatible with both iOS and Android using the Fitness Band app to track, monitor and share your fitness habits (no big surprise given LG's handsets run Google's OS)."

You can't get away from it. It was bound to come up sooner or later ... Hello Kitty gadgets galore at CES 2013.

hellokittypink01

"Massive TVs, check. Slim laptops, check. Hello Kitty gadgets galore, check. So goes the typical CES checklist, and 2013 isn't any different. Several of the feline-adorned paraphernalia we saw on the show floor were repeats from last year, but we did manage to find a few new Kitty-branded appliances and accessories that are sure to give you an insulin shock. From toasters to Bluetooth speakers, go ahead and peruse the gallery after the break for probably the most amount of pink you'll ever see at an electronics trade show."
