UPDATE: Apple have changed the way they assign downloaded apps ... unfortunately as of now, this technique will ONLY work for apps assigned to the original downloader. Have you ever wanted to install an App on your iPhone/iPad/iPod, only to find out that it's not available for your country! How annoying! When I originally bought my iPhone, I was living in the United States, and thankfully due to my location I was able to download all of my favourite Apps with no issues at all. Fast forward 2 years ... I am now living and working in Hong Kong due to family and business. I've also bought the new iPhone 4S, but to register and activate this new iPhone 4S, I had to input my credit card and address details. Yes, that's right ... both my credit card and residental address are now based in Hong Kong.
So, I happily entered my personal details, not knowing the fact that it would affect me greatly! ... The available Apps from my Apps Store are limited to the country where I registered it. Arrrggghhh ... APPLE!!! WTF?!?! There is a way around this ...
Solution 1: If you still have a vaild residential address in the US with a valid US credit card, you can log into iTunes account and change your account details. Otherwise, you're out of luck. So what will happen to all your favourite apps which you've downloaded previously? Well, if you've got a iTunes backup, then you can restore it. However, if you don't you're going to have to download the apps one by one ... with the knowledge that some of the apps aren't available due to your location. Thanks Apple!
Solution 2: Recommended ... All of Apple's app files use the file extension *.ipa. And these can be found in the following location ... "My Music/ iTunes / iTunes Media/ Mobile Applications/".
If you're lucky enough to have a friend who's already got those particular apps you're after (and you are unable to download due to your location) ... you can ask them to send them to you. Use Dropdox or zip the .ipa files and send them to you by email. Download and install *.ipa files We will take the following instructions below as an example ... on how to install an .IPA app file on your iPhone. Earlier, I written a "must-read" article on how to transfer and play .AVI movies on your iPhone. For this, you need the VLC media player app installed on your iOS device, which I thought was readily available, But to my surprise, I was approached by one of our readers saying ... "Thanks, it's a great article, but unfortunately I can't download the VLC media player from the Apps Store in my country!" Well, fear not! ... In our next steps, I will show you how you can download the VLC.ipa app file, and install it on to your iPhone (or any iOS device) without Jailbreaking or any dodgey tricks.
Once you've sync'ed your iOS device, you should be able to see the app on your screen. Remember, we didn't use any Jailbreaking or dodgey tricks. You can use the same steps as above to install other *.ipa app files.
