Unfortunately, with the new version of Office (2013), there comes a new requirement. Basically, if you're thinking about buying the new version, you should think about making it a combo pack with either Windows 7 or 8. Yeah I know, it seems like a bit of an inconvenience, as well as a hefty wad of cash. Of course, this isn't really anything new; Microsoft has used this tactic before to get customers to upgrade, a la Halo 2. But the new version of Office has, by and large, received favorable reviews and promises convenience and useful features that are certainly required by most people who work with computers and writing or business. Bottom line, it's worth the upgrade, not just for Office, but also to stay ahead in realm of operating systems. Of course if, like me, you can't afford to upgrade, you can always just stick to OpenOffice. However, it is a bit of an acquired taste. So, if you're more comfortable with Microsoft's brand, then I would recommend going with that.
