How many times have you been stranded out in the wilderness, or in the mall, when all of a sudden you look down and see your only way out of danger, or boredom, is completely dead? I think the answer for most of us is obvious: TOO MANY TIMES! But what are you to do? Looking for an outlet isn’t exactly the go-to option since you either have to wait for several hours or risk someone stealing it. So today we’re going to showcase a very crucial piece of equipment for anyone who owns a smartphone or tablet. This is the RAV Power mobile battery pack.
Actually the full title is: RAVPower Dynamo-On-the-Go RP-PB07 Super High Capacity Power Bank. That sound a little long-winded to anyone else? Heh. Well, despite the obvious fact there’s no dynamo anywhere to be found (fortunately), I guess “power bank” sounds better than simply “spare battery.” That’s ok though, because what’s in a name? We’re concerned about results, and if you simply look at the mAh (MiliAmp-Hour) rating in the title, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this “bank” will supply you with much-needed power, plus interest.

A Closer Look
From the get go, the PB07 shows promise just from the packaging. The box is exactly the right size to hold the battery, micro-usb cables, and special carrying bag for protection against the elements; namely the elements of spilled frappucino, and it’s very comfortable yet sturdy. These cables are a sight for sore eyes with coiled, stretchable cords and enough length that I’m sure most would find adequate.
I guess I didn’t mention the look of the actual product which looks almost like a smaller, thinner HD or a slighty-thicker SSD, but if you’re worried about aesthetics the pictures really do it more justice than I probably could.
The pb07 has a highly-durable and scratch-resistant chassis so you can get away with dropping it once or twice, but no more than twice is recommended. This thick outer shell protects two “side” usb ports and one central micro-usb port. But the real question is what works with it? Almost everything. iPads, iPhones, Galaxy Nexus smartphones, as well as HTC and some Nokia phones are all compatible. Unfortunately, neither Samsung nor ASUS tablets can be charged with the pb07, and some of the supported devices will require you to buy the appropriate connector.
I’ve never heard of RAVPower up ’til now, so I really had no idea what to expect in terms of overall quality. Luckily, this discovery didn’t yield painful results. 10400mAh is quite an improvement over previous models that sometimes wouldn’t cut it for multiple devices or just plain lacked enough power to properly charge one without help. A max rating of 5V @ 2A (on port #2), combined with the listed charge rating, ensures this beast will not leave you hanging. That’s really what we’re looking for, especially in emergencies when you need to contact someone or keep track of dangerous weather.
Verdict and Conclusion
There’s really not much to say to fluff up something like this because, as I said, it’s a fairly widespread type of device and really doesn’t need much of an introduction. However, that’s not to discount the utility of it. Not by a long shot.
Several pieces of tech were used to test the pb07’s mettle, the iPad 2 and Galaxy Nexus to name a few. The Nexus made it through three separate rounds of 100% charge while the iPad (not unexpectedly) only got one-and-a-half, and there’s been reports that the newest iPad can only be given 90% power before the battery needs to be recharged. It can take a little while to charge to full capacity. Maybe an hour+ depending on the device. Still, not too bad considering all the juice being divvied up between tech.
It’s common among chargers to get a bit warm during extended use, and the pb07 isn’t really an exception. That’s not too major a concern, and again is not entirely unexpected given the power
In conclusion: there’s a lot to get excited about with the pb07. Sleek design plus a monster-load of power with the ability to charge multiple devices at a time equals a recipe for success, and I think RAVPower will stay on my radar as a result. Most places list it for around $70.00 USD. I suppose to some that might seem a little high, but I can’t really say it’s unreasonable given the features. It’s just a fact that better equipment means more out of pocket.
Pros
- Small and sleek for on the go.
- Huge charging capacity.
- Charges multiple devices simultaneously
- Fair price.
Cons
- Can get pretty warm.
- Does not support Samsung or ASUS tablets.
Final words.
RAVPower has achieved a reasonable standard for the ever-growing market of mobile gadgets, especially when a good number of people own several at once. So if you fit this category or like the idea of extra power on an ad-hoc basis that will rarely fail to meet your needs, I’d say this is one of the best investments you can make and well worth the extra cost. If you’re in the market, give the pb07 some serious consideration.
