Finally! US Carriers Must Now Unlock Phones

Unlocking your phone has just become a whole lot easier.

As long as you have finished paying off your contract, it is now no longer possible for US wireless carriers to not unlock your device if you ask them to. An agreement was made in 2013 between carriers and FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler to implement this unlocking requirement.

The agreement has gone into effect and carriers must unlock devices. Specific unlocking policies can be seen on the websites for each carrier. Carriers will have to let their customers know when they are able to unlock.

Carriers will also need to unlock within two days of a request being submitted and all phones for military personnel must be unlocked when they are deployed. There are six requirements from the wireless industry group CTIA that had to be implemented by carriers by today. Half of the requirements had to be implemented by May of last year.
