SimCity

Could SimCity be one of the greatest series of games to stand the test of time? Fans nowadays are still clamoring for the modern versions of SimCity, and off-shoots such as the vastly popular The Sims series.

SimCity is an open-ended city-building computer and console video game series originally designed by developer Will Wright. It was published by Maxis, with the first version being released in 1989. Players, playing as Mayors, are given the task of founding and developing a city, while maintaining the happened of the sims living in it, and keeping a stable budget which I could never do without cheat codes…… Later iterations of the SimCity (SimCity 2000, SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4), the player could even alter the terrain on which their city could be built.

Players could create 3 different types of zones; residential, commercial or industrial, and the way these zones are linked and proximity determines the rate of growth for each zone, and the way they start modernizing themselves. Services must be provided to the sims via health, education, safety, parks and leisure facilities, and inadequate services will lead to the sims going on strikes, fires, crimes, etc.

Once you load up SimCity, forget about the rest of your week. Being open-ended, its one of those games that will keep you occupied for hours/days. The first iteration of SimCity was played via a top down 2D city map view, with later versions having a 3D view which you could rotate and even zoom in to watch individual sims going about in their daily lives. A Mac version of SimCity was also released, but it graphics were limited only to black and white.
