Ask any modder … what is one of the most important thing that you should consider, when it comes to modding? … and most will say, it’s their Work Area. That’s right, you need a decent work area with lots of space, and of course the right tools.
We take a look at some of the work areas of the modders, to see how good their work bench really is, and what tools they use to make their mods come alive!
But first, let me talk about my work area and what tools I use for my mods. You’ll be surprised!
Simplicity
Whether you are a beginner or a professional modder, simplicity is the key. Your work bench doesn’t necessarily need to be big, however I do recommend a clean and well organized work bench, although this can be hard at times 😛
Safety
Safety is the NUMBER 1 rule. Always wear protection during any modding sessions, especially when cutting your chassis with a Dremel. Goggles, gloves and anything you deem necessary. Losing any of your bodily parts is no fun let me tell you!
Space
Use whatever space you have. Be it in the garage, outdoors or even, in my case … the rooftop or stairwell of our apartment. Yes, space in Hong Kong is a premium and flats/apartments have very limited space.
The Tools
The Dremel is a MUST for any modder. It’s by far the number one tool, and should be by your side at all times. Not to mention … but the usual pliers, screwdrivers, cutters and self-retracting tape measure are all essential tools needed for successful modding.
Hard Tube Loops
For me, this one of the hardest part of modding. But boy! the result just looks amazing! However, it takes a lot of time and patience, not to mention lots of spare tubes to get it right. Here are some of the items you’ll need. Buy the Thermaltake Hard Tube bending kit from Amazon.
- Silicone Insert
- Hard Tube Cutter
- Internal and external reamer (for smooth tube edges)
- Mandrels (45°, 90°, 180°, and 360°) for maintaining the tubes’ round shapes while bending
- 1600W or higher Heat-Gun
- And practice (lots of it)
