Popular Japanese Games of All Times

Computer games received huge popularity during the self-isolation quarantines. Japanese computer games are a different world that developed according to their own canons and has absolutely outstanding examples. We tried to select the most typical Japanese PC games. There will be many JRPGs on the list as in the storytelling genre the Japanese are the best. So, let’s move on to our top-5 list of Japanese games.

1) Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo Switch)

The adventures of an Italian plumber became the classics of all times and peoples. This is one of the best games in history, and the first successful attempt to make Japan’s contribution to the global gaming industry. Brave and active Mario has won the hearts of millions and stimulated the emergence of unique side projects as a full-length feature film Super Mario Bros, comics and even slot games under the same name. A huge number of bonuses in Japanese games under this name brought many happy players decent winnings.

2) Resident Evil 2 Remake

The legendary film of 1998, qualitatively transferred to a fully 3D world. The beauty of Japanese horrors is that they present nightmares differently. Players will enjoy a familiar story about the adventures of several heroes at once – Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield who are trying to get out of Raccoon City, hit by an epidemic of a monstrous virus that escaped from the laboratories of Umbrella corporations. Players will encounter zombie people, unpredictable survivors, and other creatures that can no longer be categorized as humans.

3) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This is the most ambitious Nintendo game in the company’s history. It was ranked second on the Metacritic Top Games of All Time, generating additional buzz around the new Switch console. It is very difficult to compare it with other games – in thirty years the series itself has become a genre in which no one else could imagine an equivalent alternative. In the new release, the game has changed a lot, taking into account many popular trends – but this is still Zelda, and its wave must first be caught.

4) Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice

The game takes place in feudal Japan during the Sengoku period (the so-called era of the warring provinces, XV-XVII centuries). Sekiro is a bone-handed warrior armed with a sword and a rope with a hook. His goal is revenge, and for this, he will have to fight his way through many enemies. The combat system of Shadows Die Twice resembles Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but it is even more aggressive – there are no blocks and shields, there are only parries. If the character dies, he can be reborn right on the spot, finishing off dumbfounded enemies.

5) Dark Souls

Dark Souls is a successor to the dark and complex role-playing game Demon Souls for PlayStation 3, taking place in a dark world called Lordran. The main character is one of the carriers of the Mark of Darkness, which slowly turns him into a mad Hollow. He is forced to leave the walls of the undead Refuge to start a journey, the goal of which is to return the fading fire to the world and stop the impending Age of Darkness.
