Video Games: Design/ Play/ Disrupt is an exhibition that is set to showcase in Victoria and Albert Museum on September 8 through February 24, 2019. They will give a chance for exhibitors to showcase the design process of some groundbreaking video games. Viewers will also have a chance to get a glimpse of art and prototypes.
The Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt will begin showcasing the mediums from mid-2000 when there was a major technological advancement. This would later give rise to factors that aided the gaming industry to grow. They include:-
- Increased access to broadband,
- The availability of smartphones
- Creative new ways of designing games.
The exhibition will be displayed in the form of three aspects:- the designing process, the playing of the game and the disruption that takes place at various levels. The 6 Designers Who Are Making a Difference
Today, we are going to have a closer look at six designers who will be featured in the V&A exhibition.
- Nina Freeman, 28, Portland, Oregon
Nina Freeman is a level designer at Fullbright, Oregon. She is the kind of designer who explores sex and relationships and entails them to her games.
She graduated from New York Pace University with a bachelor’s degree in English. She would later be introduced to the world of gaming through some local developers.
She has worked on games such as-
- – Lost Memories Dot Net,
- – Cibele,
- – Kimmy.
Most of the games she has designed are as a result of experiences she has gone. But some are inspired by the type of poetry she has read.
- Robert Yang
Robert Yang is a gaming professor at the University of New York. Sexuality inspires his video gaming design. Robert has designed games based on his personal experiences as a gay man.
For instance, Rinse and Repeat which will be exhibited at the V&A is a locker room fantasy under the gay pornography genre. The game is somewhat sexually suggestive, and it was banned from sites such as Twitch.
- Neil Druckmann,39, Santa Monica, California
When the Naughty dog was created in 1984, it didn’t seem as if anyone would be willing to take up the expertise needed. But Druckmann who is the current vice-president of Naughty Dog decided to take up the financial and creative gamble.
Druckmann started off as a programmer, but he decided game design was his calling. His latest projects include:- Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Last of us Part II.
- Paolo Perdecini, 39, Pittsburgh.
Porcini’s work mostly entails serious issues facing the society such as- sexuality, social justice, environmental consciousness, religion and labour.
His games mostly are satirical that mask these issues. He is greatly known as one of the pioneers of “serious games” movement.
One of his most popular works is Phone Story which will be showcased at the V&A exhibition.
- Robin Hunicke, 45, San Fransisco, California
Hunicke is the game producer for the game Journey. She has been in the industry for the past 15 years and is a feminist. She believes women should be given equal opportunities in the arts and games
She worked with Stephen Spielberg on his game BoomBox.
- Jeff Kaplan
He is the game developer for Overwatch which is one of the games set to dominate the world of esports. Jeff Kaplan’s wittiness has brought about a game that is loved by fans.
