Wing’s Blog – Computex 2016 & Software Updates

Computex 2016

So we’re all busy putting the final touches on our articles for our FunkyKit coverage of Computex 2016, and wow was it an epic trip. Not only did we get to see some of the latest tech from all the major players in the PC industry, showcased by some stunning booth babes, we also got a dose of an earthquake, the hottest day in June ever recorded, flash floods and an airport at a stand still. There was also an incident

There were 2 themes that ran throughout the vast majority of vendors at Computex 2016, VR and RGB, both of which I have mixed feelings about.

My first taste of VR came in the shape of Virtuality, a monstrosity of an arcade game, with an equally massive headset, all to produce flickering graphics that just resulted in giving most players a migraine. VR isn’t new, but it is much more refined now, with much smoother graphics with the help of the new NVIDIA GTX 1080 graphics card, and more streamlined funky looking headsets. With sexy names like Hive and Oculus, the latest incarnation of VR took Computex 2016 by storm with nearly all the major vendors wanting to show their version of it. MSI and ZOTAC seems to be on the right path with portable VR PC backpacks, but they are still heavy and clunky, and battery life tech is still stuck in the 1980s. Cooler Master had the best implementation of VR on display with their parachute simulation, but then again how is Cooler Master and VR even related???

Virtuality

RGB just bring back fond memories of early case modding back in the 90s, I can still remember getting my first Akasa LED 80mm case fan and watched it glow in awe. I’ve always liked the color blue being used inside a PC case, and I sought up and down the country getting more blue LED fans, blue LED connectors and anything that would glow blue inside my PC.

Akasha blue LED fan

But RGB nowadays is like my blue LED Akasa fan on steroids; the lights are much brighter, and you can now program them to emit one of 16 million colors. 16 million colors. I had always thought that the term ’16 million colors’ only existed in the realms of Photoshop so that it makes the software more professional, I didn’t realize that 16 million colors do exist. To my rapidly deteriorating eyes, one hue of red is exactly the same as the next hue of red in the spectrum. It’s like watching HD TV nowadays, sure I can tell the difference between a blocky picture from a VCD to that of a DVD, and that of a DVD to 1080p HD content, but anything above that I can’t tell the difference. Which only means that I don’t do 4K, but hey, there’s 8K now for those TV-snobs out there.

What I really want is a VR system that I can carry around with me thats about the size of a cookie, has a battery life that lasts a day or two, glows at a preset color of blue (not lightly whiter, or slightly purple), a headset thats as comfortable, small and lightweight as a normal pair of glasses, and it would not give me migraines.
