A bit too aged for you, and you want something a bit more polished? Take a look at Nintendo 64 emulators, and the one I tried out was Project64.
Oh yes, Super Mario 64 plays as sleek as it looks, along with its renowned soundtrack. Rummaging around the keyboard trying to figure out which keys corresponded to the ones on the joypad meant that my very next piece of hardware I will get is a USB gamepad, no question about it. Even fumbling around in the game with using the keyboard, I had to wrench myself away from the game otherwise my dog would have died of starvation.
Of course, even if starting up the PC and loading up the emulator for you is a bit too much, then you can opt for consoles such as the Retro Freak to satisfy your retro gaming needs. The latest fab in Hong Kong is called 月光寶盒4, or Pandoras Box 4 (I’m guessing here that their were 3 previous iterations of it).
Its about the size of a very big skateboard, and is connected to your TV via HDMI. As you can see it is reminiscent of the video arcade controllers for 2 players. As standard, each Pandoras Box 4 comes with 645 games built in. Every time I pass through the Golden Computer Arcade in SSP I will have a quick game on one.
Prices start around RMB680, but can exceed RMB1000 depending on the type of design of the joystick. Remember when you used to go into an video arcade and one the games had their joystick permanently shifted at an angle? That’s because the joystick mechanism is broken. I have it on good authority for a die hard Street Fighter 2 player that the better designs of the joystick means they last much much longer.
Be warned though, in the 645 built-in games you will find different versions of the same game that were released over the years, so you might enjoy playing one version but never the others. Being on the favourite games touted for the Pandoras Box 4 is King of Fighters 94 and 1942. The Pandoras Box 4 sits comfortably in your lap, so you can lie back on your sofa and retro game to your hearts content.
