On the other floor of the Golden Computer Arcade, I can across what might be the next toy I buy. Named as Retro Freak, it is a gaming console that can play a list of vintage formats: Famicom, Super Famicom/SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16. It’s also possible to play Master System titles with a Power Base Mini adapter.
The missus is always bugging me to get some ‘cute’ easy to understand games for my gaming consoles, and the Retro Freak might just be what she’ll enjoy. The Retro Freak allows you to dump ROMs from cartridges onto a MicroSD card, and once you’ve done that you can disconnect the cartridge adapter and store it away if you so wish. This makes the system even easier to integrate into your cramped entertainment setup – the main component of the console is roughly the size of a SNES cartridge.
And here’s the main bait which has me hooked. For HK$1788 from a certain retailer, he will pre-dump onto MicroSD cards 11,000 retro games from all the above gaming consoles listed above! Let me repeat that once more, 11,000 games!!! If I play each one for an average of just 30 minutes, thats nearly 4 months of continuous gaming.
With all the different ports available, if you have kept any vintage games cartridges you can now dust them off and replay them.
