After writing just a few articles for the previous Funkykit site, it struck me how aged and limited the editor in Joomla was. And thus began the weeks and weeks of trying to persuade Winston to get a different system in, namely WordPress. Hell, if the BBC uses it, its good enough for me. Having had limited previous experience with WordPress, and the rather limited WordPress.com at that, I knew all the functions that Winston wanted for Funkykit’s website was all there, and plenty more.
Winston, being an old fashioned kinda guy, need some serious persuasion, so everybody was taken by surprise when he announced he had set up the new site already, and had migrated all the old data other, all in the space of a weekend. Thus began the endless search for the all the fandango themes and plugins available for WordPress. We must have looked at over a thousand themes, talking about the layout and where we should have certain things, and as you can see from the new site that its far from finished, as we are still locking down the final theme and look. So if you have any feedback, please just send it in to us. One thing that I do like how the site looks right now is how its presented on my smartphone; nice and clean.
Kickerstarter and Remix TV
I’ve been meaning to write an article on Kickstarter, its half done and somewhere on my hard disk somewhere, but I just can’t seem to getting round to finish it as every other day some bright spark designs something whack that really deserves a mention.
So, taking a small break from looking at WordPress themes and plugins, the missus dragged me out to go shopping. We stumbles upon a small warehouse-cum-art installation/shopping centre called D2 in Lai Chi Kok. We did wonder what this ‘D2’ stood for; was it D for Design? Only to get our answer when we exited the MTR at exit D2 and it was right across the road….
Whilst I tried to look interested while the missus looked at all sort of trinkets, fate threw its dice and I got a 6 as I spotted a shop called Backers.
Backers is shop containing Kickerstarters, the majority of which are Hong Kong based. The products being sold were ready to sell and there was some nice tech stuff to fiddle with such as a 3D LED installment you can control with a minimum computer control, no coding necessary. To keep the missus happy, she picked up a packet of what look like post-it notes, but worked using slight magnetic force and static to stick on any smooth surface with no adhesive necessary.
In the corner was the gem, a Remix Mini. I had written about Remix 2.0, an Android based OS for Macs and PCs, but the Remix Mini is an all in one computer the size of hockey puck. All you need is a TV/monitor, keyboard and mouse (the ones on display were connected via Bluetooth), and you have a very handy computer you can take around with you. Of course, it used the Remix OS, so the lack of power hardware contained in the enclosure was made up with the zippiness of OS. Strangely, its power button is actually the entire top of the enclosure, so if you tap the top of it, the Remix Mini went to sleep….
DoggyTLK
After I had written the about the DoggyTLK tracker in my HK Pet Show 2016 Funky Kits (part 1) I was contacted by the company and was politely asked if they can use my article for feedback on how they would further improve their products. Little did I expect they would feature my article on their Facebook page!
