CES 2013: OCZ Shows Off Epic Storage

OCZ’s at it again, these guys just don’t quit! … Not only is the new Vector 2.5″ SSD stomping around, OCZ has something newer and shinier coming! A couple things, actually. Here’s a picture:

Anybody remember the Revodrive3 we tested? This is faster. More pics and some performance numbers after the Read More.

The basic layout of the Vector PCIe is very similar to the Revodrive3, the big difference is that instead of a pair of Sandforce controllers we have a pair of OCZ’s own chips, plus a bunch of DDR3 cache.

Want performance numbers? You’re in luck, OCZ had a test system up and running for us to run benchmarks on.

ATTO results are just over 1GB/s for read and just under it for write, faster than the Revodrive3. AS SSD results are much higher in all categories, very impressive. The 4K reads aren’t as much higher as I’d expect, but it is worth noting that this is a fairly early firmware and driver setup. Speaking of drivers, much like the Revodrive3 series official drivers will only be available for Windows.

Two Vectors = one Vector PCIe, essentially. Hardware RAID0’d together. I like this better than a RAID array with two normal SSDs personally, as you can take the revo out and swap motherboards/etc. without having to worry about the array eating it.

If I recall correctly the Vector PCIe will be available in sizes up to 960GB or so. If that’s not enough, check out the Z-Drive R4!

That’s 3.6 terabytes of SSD, a x8 PCIe connector, and a ton of controllers. They didn’t have one of these plugged in unfortunately. It’s aimed at enterprise use and carries an enterprise pricetag: About $18,000.

Look for a review of the Vector and hopefully Vector PCIe coming soon. The Z-Drive we’re going to have a harder time getting our hands on!
