At last some great news. It’s about time Netflix users are allow to watch their favorite shows outside the country of their subscription. The EU member states have now agreed roaming for Netflix.
For the past few years, it was one of the most annoying thing ever … not being able to stream or watch shows which users have already purchased, just because you’re located at a different location other then the country of your subscription.
Previously, content that was tailored to local tastes, say for example a French user in Belgium, will not have access to specific French programmes. The only way around this was to use virtual private networks.
“Consumers will be able to access their online subscriptions for services like Netflix (NFLX.O), Sky (SKYB.L) and Canal+ (IPO-CANALFRA.PA) when they travel across the European Union under proposals tentatively agreed by member states on Friday.
The law was presented by the EU executive, the European Commission (EC), last December as part of its efforts to knock down national barriers in online services across the 28-member bloc.
Member state representatives endorsed the proposal on Friday, paving the way for it to be approved by ministers when they meet on May 26.
Consumers with subscriptions to services such as Sky TV Now, ProSiebenSat.1MaxDome TV (PSMGn.DE) in Germany or Netflix in France, would be able to view content they have paid for when they temporarily travel abroad.”
