VLC calls its the most versatile media player in the world and there’s certainly truth to that claim. It’s capable of playing just about every other media format out there not to mention the fact that VLC is available for almost every platform. It has finally added support for a new media that’s gaining traction. The VLC 360-degree video support is finally here, albeit as a technical preview.
The team behind VLC has released a technical preview which allows VLC for desktop to play 360-degree videos. This will enable users to easily view the 360-degree video they capture using devices like the Gear 360 camera from Samsungon their computers.
This technical preview of VLC 360-degree video support is now available for the desktop version which has been released for both Windows and Mac computers. This feature is going to be released as part of the full version in the next big reason of VLC which will bring up the version number to 3.0 when it arrives in the coming week.
To bring 360-degree video support for VLC, the team has worked with Giroptic, a manufacturer of 360-degree cameras. The media player is now capable of displaying videos, photos, and panoramas which users can control through the mouse and keyboard.
VideoLan, the team that develops VLC, has said that it’s going to eventually bring these features to VLC for mobile as well. VideoLan is planning to support big VR headsets like the Oculus Rift, Google Daydream, and HTC Vive by next year as well.
