As we move closer and closer to the reality of self-driving cars, one thing that has really held the appeal back is the large sensors needed that are installed on the roof of the vehicles. In a bid to overcome this, Acura introduced today its second generation Automated Acura RLX Development Vehicle with updated sensors with a more aesthetically look.
The spinning LIDAR sensors that you now find on self-driving vehicles have been replaced by a much more compact version of the light detection and ranging technology. Boasting of updated RADAR, GPS and higher performance CPUs and GPUS, as well as what is referred to as “more intelligent software algorithms to support more complex testing scenarios” by Acura, this prototype does seem a step in the right direction.
