The new Countryman, going live at the LA Auto Show Wednesday, will be the biggest, “most adventurous” Mini ever. All three Countryman variants will be in attendance, including the base, the S and the new plug-in hybrid S E ALL4.
The whole lineup will be turbocharged, according to Mini. In hybrid models, the boosted three-cylinder will join an electric motor and battery, as well as Mini’s “e-rear axle,” which gives the ALL4 its traction. That powertrain will be good for 221 hp, says Mini. Preliminary all-electric range is 24 miles.
The base Mini will get 134 hp and 162 lb-ft from the gas engine, with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The non-electric ALL4 will get the same engine, but with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The faster, S models will get a four-cylinder turbo with 189 hp and 207 lb-ft. That also comes with either an eight-speed auto or a six-speed manual.
The Countryman’s bigness will be felt inside with 30 percent more cargo space helped out by sliding, folding rear seats, a high roofline and adjustable trunk floor. Legroom, headroom and shoulder room are also up.
Minis always come well equipped. Without checking a box, this Countryman gets a sunroof, fake leather upholstery, keyless entry, Mini Connected infotainment system, rearview camera, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and automatic headlights.
The non-electric Countryman goes on sale next March, while the S E ALL4 plug-in hybrid goes on sale in June. Pricing will be announced soon.
