Asus just announced the new smartwatch, and it’s got a round display, distinctive design, and a new Snapdragon 2100 system-on-a-chip.
This is the first watch Asus has made with a round display after stubbornly sticking to the square design last year. The ZenWatch 3 has a 1.39-inch round AMOLED with a resolution of 400×400. So, very much like the Huawei Watch. There’s still 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage like other watches.
This is the first watch announced with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 2100 chip, which was detailed earlier this year. It’s a quad-core A7 chip specifically tuned to work in wearables. Hopefully that means the ZenWatch 3 can make good use of its 340mAh battery. Asus says 1-2 days of battery life. Hey, if it’s closer to 2 days, that’s an improvement over most other watches.
The ZenWatch 3 has a 45mm case and is 10.75mm thick. The design of the lugs is quite unusual. Combined with the oversize buttons, it has a steampunk vibe. I’m sure it’ll be divisive, but I think it looks interesting. The ZenWatch 3 will be available soon for €229 (about $255). We don’t have an official US price or a release date.
