Having promised to deliver the “best PC gaming experience” for Gears of War 4, developer The Coalition has now shed some light on technical features available only when playing it on a computer.
“Our focus on PC is to deliver a highly optimized, customizable experience first and foremost,” technical director Mike Rayner told Eurogamer. The game will benefit from the recently added support for Universal Windows Platform games to disable vertical sync, allowing The Coalition to “offer proper unlocked frame-rate support that gamers expect on day one.”
Rayner also says the PC version supports higher-resolution textures (going as high as 4K for “select texture groups,” dynamic resolution support (including ultra-wide), and a benchmarking mode. You’ll also have the ability to completely remap the controls–including a way to split up the input for running and entering cover, which are both assigned to the A button on Xbox.
There will also be extensive video settings to tweak; Rayner said there are currently 28 different options, with more still to be added potentially.
“Along with more settings, we’re putting extra time into making it clear what impact a setting will have on GPU/CPU/VRAM so there is a clear correlation between a setting change and its performance impact,” he said, which would be a welcome addition for those who don’t necessarily have the deepest knowledge of these things.
The PC version will also support dynamic resolution scaling similar to what’s seen on Xbox One, where the frame rate is locked at 30 FPS in single-player and 60 FPS in multiplayer.
“We will support super-sampling and have come up with a neat system using the dynamic scaling created for Xbox,” Rayner explained. “You can super-sample, let’s say up to 4K, and then enable dynamic scaling and set the maximum amount of scaling you want to allow so you can maintain a very crisp image with scaling kicking in where needed and only to the amount you consider acceptable.”
Gears of War 4 launches on October 11 as an Xbox Play Anywhere game. This allows you to buy a digital copy on either Xbox One or PC and receive access on both platforms. The Coalition recently revealed the many ways in which the game has changed since its beta earlier this year and teased that a movie based on the series could be on the way.
