Sales of the Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4) have passed the 40 million mark, twice the estimated number of Xbox One consoles sold.
Sony said on Thursday that the PS4 hit the milestone on 22 May, making it the world’s fastest selling games console to date.
The company is probably most pleased about the fact that this puts it way ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox One which, according to recent analyst figures, reached the 20 million sales mark in April.
Sales of PS4 games, as you’d expect, are looking pretty rosy too. Sony said that more than 270.9 million units have been sold globally, bigging up the recently released Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End which has already sold over 2.7 million copies.
Sony has some more big hitters on the way too, boasting that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Paragon, Gran Turismo SPORT and The Last Guardian are coming soon and are likely to fluff up the bumper sales.
The PlayStation VR is slated for a release in October, as well as the upcoming PlayStation Neo Console. With this in mind, Sony expects to flog another 20 million consoles in the next year.
“We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short time,” said PlayStation boss Andrew House.
“We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market and providing ground-breaking features and network services.”
Microsoft is playing catch-up and reportedly looking for other ways to get its console into the hands of customers. The company is gearing up to launch a Chromecast-style Xbox One device at this year’s E3 conference, according to rumours.
