Sony is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its PlayStation gaming console with a special PS4 model.
Consumers can watch Saturday’s PlayStation Experience keynote for more details on how to purchase one of the collectable consoles. The event begins at 1 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 6.
The original PlayStation was released in Japan on Dec. 3, 1994. In a bout of nostalgia, the electronics maker has introduced a limited-edition PlayStation 4 (above, left), complete with an “original grey” finish that is reminiscent of the original PlayStation console.
Only 12,300 units (reflecting the initial launch date) will be shipped worldwide, with a €499 ($616) price tag.
“The mid-90s were an exciting time for game developers, driven by the explosion of powerful but affordable 3D graphics rendering hardware and the birth of many young and adventurous development studios,” Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, wrote in a blog post. “The original PlayStation was meant to embody that sense of adventure and discovery, that sense that anything was possible.”
Running an x86 processor and enhanced PC GPU, the anniversary PS4 comes with 8GB of high-speed unified memory and system memory backed by local storage. It also comes with the revamped DualShock 4 controller, which is available in “original grey” with the 20th Anniversary Edition pack.
