What does this mean? Well, it means DirectX 12 Ultimate API can now support ray-tracing – Woohoo! Ray-tracing was only available for Nvidia GeForce RTX cards in recent months, but not it looks like AMD’s up-coming RDNA 2 architecture with Navi 2X GPUs will also support ray-tracing via DX12U.
Taken from Videocardz … NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics card will support DirectX 12 Ultimate with ray tracing, variable-rate shading, mesh shader and sampler feedback. Ray tracing is currently only supported by NVIDIA Turing GPUs (Tier 1.1), while variable-rate shading is also supported by Intel HD Graphics Gen 11 (Tier 1).
The GeForce RTX series based on Turing is currently the only existing GPU architecture to support DirectX 12 Ultimate out of the box. AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture coming later this year with Navi 2X GPUs will also support DX12U. Both next-gen gaming consoles will also benefit from AMD RDNA 2 architecture, but only XBOX Series X will support DX12U.
