In the first half of 2015, MediaTek had launched the world’s first deca-core SoC (System on Chip) for smartphone built on tri-cluster architecture. Later the company also unveiled the Helio X25 SoC that was slightly overclocked, but both SoC’s haven’t been on par with the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820. As rumors suggested, the company had launched the Helio X30 SoC as the successor to Helio X20/X25 today in China. Earlier the company also unveiled the new Helio P20 SoC as the successor to Helio P10 SoC.
This new processor will be built on TSMC’s 10nm FinFET architecture. Even the Apple A10 chipset that will be used in the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are rumored to be built on the same 10nm process. In comparison, last years Helio X20 and Helio X25 used the 20nm process. Out the total ten cores of Helio X30, four Cortex A73 cores are clocked at whopping 2.8GHz, four Cortex A53 cores at 2.2GHz, and the two Cortex A35 core at 2GHz. The Helio X30 is accompanied by PowerVR 7XT quad core GPU.
With the powerful GPU, the Helio X30 can also be used for virtual reality devices. It supports upto 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM and latest UFS 2.1 standards for storage. It supports upto 26MP camera and also the dual camera setup. Considering the delay in mass production of 10nm chipsets, we can only see devices with Helio X30 at the end of the first half or at the beginning of second half. It comes with a modem that supports three carrier aggregation (3CA) which combines the three bands and supports Cat.12 LTE.
The deca-core Helio X20 is now used in the budget smartphone like 360 N4 which is priced at just 899 Yuan (approx $135 / Rs. 9,000). Qualcomm recently unveiled the Snapdragon 821 SoC as an upgraded variant to Snapdragon 820 SoC and also offers 10% better performance.
