I’ve had some experience with the Panasonic Lumix GH4 … it’s a lovely camera, but this new Lumix S5 mirrorless camera with full-frame, 4K recording at 60fps, flip-out display, five-axis in-body stabilization and more … looks SO sexy! It’ll cost you $1999 just for the body though!
Taken from Engadget … With its S1 series, Panasonic has enjoyed a monopoly on full-frame mirrorless cameras that record high-quality 10-bit 4K video. However, in the last month or two, Canon and Sony released formidable video-centric cameras that can match the S1 for video, while being considerably smaller than the two-pound-plus S1. Now, Panasonic has responded with the full-frame Lumix S5. It takes nearly everything that’s good about the Lumix S1 and puts it into a much smaller and lighter body.
The S5 retains key S1 video features like 10-bit 4K video, five-axis in-body stabilization and a flip-out display and, to top things off, it has a new and improved autofocus system that’s faster than what you’ll find on Panasonic’s larger full-frame S1 cameras.
Pros
- 4K 10-bit video
- 5-axis stabilization
- Flip-out display
- Compact size
- Faster autofocus
Cons
- Poor contrast-detect autofocus
- Poor electronic viewfinder
- Slow photo burst speeds
Summary
The Lumix S5 is Panasonic’s answer to Canon’s EOS R6 and is the best video-centric camera in its price range. It’s smaller and costs less than the Lumix S1, but it actually delivers better video features. That includes a flip-out display, five-axis in-body stabilization and 10-bit 4K recording at up to 60 fps. The autofocus is faster and more accurate than the S1, but not as good as Sony and Canon’s systems for video. It has a poor electronic viewfinder, and while it delivers sharp and color-accurate photos, you’ll never mistake it for an action camera because of the low burst speeds.
