Conclusion and Verdict
Well Schiit that was a great audio experience! Like any sound system you will notice a huge difference if you have a amp feeding the source. Car stereo systems, home theater systems, and even headphones just sound better when the source is amplified. Now what I first noticed about the Hel is the lack of plastic. The Hel is housed in metal and not cheap plastic. The finish and paint were both flawless. The switches are sturdy and the volume knob has a nice feel to it. Overall great construction.
Once you hook it up you start to appreciate the difference immediately. The sounds are enhanced across virtually every frequency. I like to listen to music and I will be honest if I don’t have something like this hooked up I will notice and I know I missing out on some of the sounds. It is hard to physically show you results other than throwing a bunch of specs at you that probably look like a different language. But I can express to you that the difference is there and the difference is very noticeable. This particular unit is simple to use, hook up , and has a small footprint on your desk. The unit is made of metal and has quality on every square inch. To wrap this up, some of the spec may be hard to understand to what they actually effect in the listening experience, but in simple terms, it enhance the majority over any stock output.
Let talk about the listening experience. Overall I can say my experience was enhanced. Which is what I would expect with any external amplifier system. If the claim is to enhance my sound I want a determinable amount of increase in the sound compared too without the amp. I was impressed, First thing I noticed was the bass. It hit harder, sounded deeper, and I was able to turn it up louder without encountering distortion that I was getting before. The sound felt wider. How can I put this? When I was using headphones the sound felt like it was coming from far away but also like it was right on top of me. I think that makes sense? The sound was fantastic! While gaming it put a noticeable enhancement on all the sounds while not hurting the overall gaming experience.
OK lastly, lets discuss connections. You have a pretty wide array of devices you can hook up to the Hel. Any analog speaker system, any device that uses a 3.5mm line out (with the included adapter), and USB for a computer. This pretty much cover everything except one thing I was disappointed not seeing. I cant hook up my USB headset. I am torn because I can see the Hel having a permanent spot on my desk. I am also not willing to give up my headset. So for now I can’t use my gaming headset through the Hel.
You can find the Hel on Schiit for $189.99 USD.
