Connecting it to the Canon 80D
The setup was simple. We used a HDMI cable with a standard HDMI connector on one end (this plugs in to the capture box), and the other end with mini HDMI connector plugs into the camera.
Switch on the Canon 80D camera and that’s pretty much it, as far as hardware is concerned. Remember to switch off your timer/power saving mode on the camera. Ok, the real magic happens when you start recording or streaming the video feed via the software you decide to use. You can use the Avermedia’s RECental3 software, which is free to download or use 3rd party software such as Xsplit or OBS. In our example, we’ll be using OBS.
RECentral 3
Straight away, the software recognized the video feed from the Canon 80D ! … Excellent. Now that’s I have a far more superior camera over a webcam, I can now have high quality video streaming.
The free to download RECentral 3 software from Avermedia is more than capable to record at full HD 1080p at 60 frames per second. Bases on the graphics card you are currently using, you can use between two Codecs – Nvidia or H.264
Stream directly to Twitch, Ustream, YouTube Live, Facebook Live, NicoNico Hitbox or just Facebook.
OBS (64-bit) v17.0
The OBS software allows you to add a video capture source. Just select the option Avermedia GC550 Video Capture and your video feed should appear.
Clicking “Configure Video” will bring up this window. Make sure the video input is selected to HDMI.
For Resolution/FPS Type … Select “Custom” and set the resolution to 1920×1080. For information on how to setup and use OBS software for streaming … click here.
If everything worked out good … you should be able to add more sources including various media types, images, slideshows, and even an extra video source such as a webcam.
Here’s a LIVE recorded video footage of the Avermedia LGX working with OBS … streamed to Facebook Live.
Final Thoughts
If you’re serious about high quality streaming and recording, then you can forget using your webcam or iPhone. With the Avermedia Live Gamer Extreme and a decent DSLR or digital camera, you’ll have a perfect setup to stream live at full HD, along with tons of options to add/edit your video feed to your liking.
The average price of the Avermedia Live Gamer Extreme can be found on Amazon for around USD $160-180, which I think is acceptable for such a feature-rich and high-end capture card. Find out what users have said about the Avermedia Live Gamer Extreme.
