Scythe Mugen 4 CPU Cooler Review

The package

The packaging of the Mugen 4 is nice and simple, just the most needed information and its not overwhelming.

The cooler itself is protected by only the box, a piece of foam is separating the cooler from the fan.The box with the accessories is located on the floor of the case under a piece of foam with a cutout for the coolers copper contact plate.

In the box you can find the Mugen 4 itself, a 120mm fan and an accessory box, which includes: all the screws and standoffs, the backplate and mounting brackets and an installation guide, that shows you step by step how to install the mugen 4 on your motherboard for Intel LGA 2011, LGA 775 / 1150 / 1155 /1156 / 1366 And for the AMD AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / AM3+ / FM1 / FM2. I do recommend you to read it if you are a new user. There is NO shame in reading a manual, better read it then break some of your precious hardware.

Now I am going to take a closer look to the Mugen 4 itself

“How to improve an almost perfect cooler? This question indeed caused some sleepless nights for the engineers at Scythe! Every little detail was looked at from every thinkable angle to find room for improvement. First, the “famous” Slip Stream fan had to give way to the new Glide Stream. Then, the already very efficient cooling fin design was modified to optimize the airflow even more. But what is perfect cooling without a convenient, user-friendly mounting system? This is where the Mugen 4 really differs from its’ predecessor – a totally blue-penciled, new mounting system guarantees quick, but at the same time, stable mounting on all common sockets on the market today.”

The Mugen 4 is a fairly big tower style Air cooler, With the aluminium design an 12! heatpipes it look very good too

Here you have a look at the contact block for your CPU with the 12 copper heatpipes for maximum heat dissipation

I find the fan mounting mechanism is a little bit difficult, you need to attach the two fan clips to mounting holes of the fan (the up and down side) and then clip it over the heatsink to attach it. So it is fairly easy but you just need to clip it over the heatsink and that’s the hard part.

The thing i really like about the Glide Stream PWM fan Scythe includes is black sleeved cable with the 3 / 4 pin fan connector.
At an average speed of 1200-1400 RPM the fan is rated for 66.5-79 CFM airflow and about 24.5-28 dMA for noise level. Its definitely not the best and quietest fan on the marked but its not bad.

Scythe thermal paste

Scythe did include some thermal paste but your better of if you buy some other tubed thermal past for a couple of reasons. Its easier to apply on your CPU, It cools better and its better quality (if you buy some decent thermal paste).

So lets get to the  testing now!
