Initial Thoughts
Packaging isn’t much an issue, and it really shouldn’t be. Perhaps not as much extra support as other boxes but certainly good enough to keep everything intact with some room to breathe.
On the other hand, if you’re a literature fan, you’ll be glad to know Thermaltake has included two seperate instruction manuals plus a warranty pamphlet which I do recommend reading at least once for most products.
Closer Look
At first I really wasn’t sure what to expect. Now having actually experienced it for myself, I’m happy to say I like what I’ve received. With the plastic shell comes the ability to add or remove fans as you please with only a little bit of force in either direction without the need to mess about with metal clips until you beg for mercy. Not only that, but both included fan cables are bound together so you need only plug in the cable and you’re set.
Also included is a fan speed dial for easy access to one that suits you; however, there are technically only three speeds available: low, medium, and maximum, or rather: quiet, loud, and just plain noisy, but we’ll get to that in a moment. On that note: something you’ll probably spot the minute you’ve got it installed is the Untouchable allows free usage of all memory slots; a feature noticeably lacking from a good deal of other coolers. I think most would agree it’s nice to have better temperature control without having to sacrifice other areas of performance.
Adding to the list of improvements, the Untouchable’s mounting system is by far one of the most hassle-free. You have the standard bundle of accessories (which takes up only three small plastic bags), but the parts themselves are not so standard. The black spacers are threaded which means you can fasten the back screws to the motherboard witout having to deal with them falling out before you even get the socket brackets installed.
However, I did notice neither the brackets or backplate come with the usual grooves for the different socket sizes. The manuals actually do show them having grooves, but I just didn’t see them. It wasn’t really inconvenience but it’s a bit odd, and I can’t help mentioning it if that’s something with which you might have a problem.
