Testing and Results

And now to probably everybody else’s favorite part. The actual numbers:

The test system is again:

  • Intel Core i7 4770k (Haswell)
  • Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H Motherboard (Review Pending)
  • 8gb Patriot Viper Extreme 1600mhz
  • Corsair 600W CX600 PSU

As usual, the 4770K will be run at a mild overclock and a higher overclock:

  • 4.1ghz with 1.15v Core
  • 4.5GHz with 1.3v Core.

Results

Again we’ll be using the standard metric of idle and load temperature(s) minus the ambient temperature.

4.1Ghz Testing

 nic 4.1ghz

Pretty average start, but as usual, stock settings are just that.  Let’s see how it fairs with a little more heat behind it.

Overclocked

 nic 4.5ghz

For the most part, these are still respectable levels.

The graph shown is the speed taken at the default fan settings (without the controller), at maximum speed there was only, at the most, a -2oC difference and with lower fan speeds about +4oC difference.  Every speed has been taken into consideration.

Noise Level

The problem is even though there is a slight advantage at the maximum speed, I don’t recommend keeping it at that level as it is quite loud and even annoying if you don’t use headphones or use a relatively-high volume setting.

At the default speed it’s more tolerable but is still a little on the loud side.  On the lowest setting, however, it’s not a whole lot worse than the hard drive motor.
