Testing results
For testing the fans we used the same setup throughout out the process. All we did was change the fans and compared temperature results under full load. We tested the temps using a i5 8600k processor clocked at 4.2 GHz. We ran the “Stress CPU” test in Aida64 for 10 minutes and recorded the results. I took each recordable core temperature and added them together and then divided by the number of cores. This gave me an average over all cores for a average result between the individual temperatures. I like this better than a package temperature. In the tables below you will find how the Toughfan 12 compared to over fans.
These dB readings are taken with a dB meter placed roughly 1’6″ from the front for the fans.
Decibel Readings
RPM | dB |
576 – Silent | 10 |
960 – Silent | 12 |
1216 – Silent | 13 |
1376 – Silent | 16 |
1568 – Silent | 16 |
1856 – Start to notice fan noise | 19 |
2048 – Max Rated | 23 |
2221 – Software Controlled | 24 |
2499 – Software Controlled | 26 |
The minimum speed I could set the fan was 576 RPM. At this speed the fan was virtually silent but didn’t move very much air. A complete silent room is usually around 5-9 dB. White noise is always around. So anything around this level is going to be virtually silent compared to your surroundings. In the table above you will see the decibel ratings at the tested RPM. Now as far as audible noise I didn’t notice any difference in sound until I reached around 1800 RPM. At this speed I began to hear the fans. The noise by no means was horrible. The fan is rated to a max of 2000 RPM. I went ahead and pushed them even farther. I was able to set them to 2499 RPM. This is over the recommended levels but the fans performed very well at this speed and the max decibel at that RPM was 26dB. At the the rated 2000 RPM the fans produced a dB reading of 23dB. This is right in line with advertised levels.
As you can see the fans did not disappoint in the thermal results!
