Ever had the frustration of taking videos on your smartphone and when you watch them back they’re all jumpy and you get motion sickness? Or how about blurry photos as your hands are just not steady enough. To be honest, for every video/photos we post on FunkyKit, we must dispose of another 20 or so. With this in mind, I’ve always fancied a gimbal for either my smartphone or GoPro action camera, and it was about time we actually got our hands on one to play with.
DJI is synonymous with drones, be it their very popular Phantom series, or their professional Inspire. Their latest news headline grabber is the new Mavis Pro drone that is both lightweight and compact. To pair photography with their drones, DJI has developed the Osmo range of gimbals to give you steady shots either on a drone or handheld.
Today we’ll be taking a quick look at the DJI Osmo Mobile, the baby of the Osmo series, designed for taking photos and videos on your smartphone. Released at the beginning of September, the Osmo Mobile comes in at HK$2289 comfortably fitting in the price bracket of HK$2000-2500 thats occupied by nearly all the consumer gimbals such as FeiYu Tech G4 or Lanparte LA3D, but what makes the Osmo Mobile stand out?
Capture memories and share life’s moments more easily and more cinematically than ever with the Osmo Mobile. It turns your smartphone into a smart motion camera, making every moment you shoot look smooth, professional and ready to share. Use it with the DJI GO app to automatically track your subject, capture stunning motion timelapses or even stream a moment live around the globe.

A quick look at the hardware specifications and several things stand out. The DJI Osmo Mobile uses the tried and trusted Zenmuse M1 gimbal thats fast and superbly smooth. Couple this with a 980mAh LiPo battery, you should expect over 4 hours of continual use. The downside seems to be the operating temperature, with the minimum being 0°C, so don’t expect it to work in wintery conditions.
