Conclusion and Verdict
Kingston DataTraveler Bolt Duo 64GB is quite unique flash drive. There are not many similar devices on the market so it’s interesting option for all those who want to use additional storage with their Apple devices. Additional software let to use the flash drive as “internal” storage and we can move files easily between mobile devices and PC.
I’m not a fan of a keychain design but it’s still helpful.
Performance is good but I wish to see higher write bandwidth as 20MB/s looks quite low for new USB 3.1/Lightning flash drive.
Kingston offers two-year warranty on the Bolt Duo flash drives. It’s a standard warranty and I would expect something longer but I guess that most users will buy new flash drives after these two years like Apple fans are replacing their iPhones.
The DT Bolt Duo is quite expensive but I guess that all products designed for Apple devices share this feature. Amazon is selling the flash drive for about $90. On the other hand if we wish compatibility with Apple devices and additional features then it’s hard to find anything better in lower price.
Pros:
- Mobile
- Durable, one metal case without moving parts
- Small and light
- Compatible with USB and Lightning devices
- Functionality with Apple devices ( direct writing to the flash drive )
Cons:
- Accessory could be better designed
- Write bandwidth could be higher
- Expensive
Final words
Even though on the list are some cons then list of advantages is much longer. If anyone is looking for a small but high capacity storage for Apple devices which at the same time works on a typical PC then Kingston DT Bolt Duo is the way to go. It combines high performance, double connectors, high quality and durability closed in a small package. Tested 64GB capacity is just perfect for most users and seems optimal but there is also 128GB version if anyone needs more space.
