Crucial X8 2TB Portable SSD Review

Performance

The performance has been tested on the ASUS TUF A15 laptop with AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, 8-core processor, 64GB DDR4-3200, and Crucial P5 500GB M.2 SSD with installed Win10 Pro x64. This is a popular laptop, and all other components are readily available in stores.

Let’s begin as usual with the ATTO Disk Benchmark.

The maximum bandwidth in the ATTO benchmark is 1.02GB/s. This is the highest result we’ve seen on a USB SSD so far. It looks even better on the screenshots, showing how the bandwidth reaches its maximum and keeps it till the end of the test.

In CrystalDiskMark, our results are higher than expected, with the maximum read bandwidth of 1097MB/s and the maximum write of 1092MB/s. This is an amazing result for the USB SSD.

Random operations bandwidth is also high, giving us hopes on high performance during mixed workloads or more professional tasks, including work on larger databases.

Below we can see results based on PCMark 8 and PCMark 10. Both benchmarks show high results, which are about as high, if not higher, than that of the M.2 PCIe x2 SSD.

Above is a screenshot from the PCMark 8 while below from the PCMark 10.

The maximum bandwidth in PCMark 10 is beating the competition. Even though these tests are not really designed for portable SSD, they show that Crucial X8 is faster than many internal SSD available on the market, even though it is using a USB connection.

Crucial X8 2TB SSD proves that portable SSD can be lightning-fast and spacious at the same time. This small SSD lets us carry a huge amount of data and move it quickly between various devices. Anyone who needs fast, portable storage will be fully satisfied.
