Overclocking
Overclocking is never guaranteed so the presented results may vary from results on other memory kits. I am not recommending overclocking if you do not know what are you doing. High voltages may damage hardware and it will not be covered by warranty.
Trident Z memory is designed for the most demanding users like overclockers so I will show you some of the settings you may expect deciding to buy Trident Z 2x8GB DDR4-3200 memory kit.
I was testing reviewed memory kit at various settings using ASUS Maximus VIII Hero motherboard. Some of the settings tested under longer stability tests you can see in the table below.
Pushing memory higher you can expect it to reach DDR4-3600 mark but it’s hard to find motherboard on the market which is able to keep stability at this frequency using 8GB or higher capacity modules. Most motherboard manufacturers are not guaranteeing stable work above DDR4-3200 what depends from many factors and one of the most important is memory controller which is integrated in the processor.
Let’s focus on settings which are available on more popular motherboards and lower range of voltages.
Without raising voltage and without any changes to XMP profile, I was able to set stable DDR4-3333 16-18-18-38 1.35V. This is quite good result considering that tested memory kit is based on 8GB modules.
Mentioned result you can see below. It was tested in more benchmarks and I had no problems with stability at these settings.
Next step is maximum stable clock at still quite low voltage. I decided it will be 1.40V but memory can probably work at higher voltages. I don’t think anyone tested maximum voltage for long, full load work. There is also reason why market’s standard is 1.35V for anything above DDR4-3000.
Let’s take a look at achieved result.
DDR4-3466 is a great result considering already mentioned platform limitations. Voltage had to be higher to keep stability but 1.4V is still not that high to be worry about memory. Also used memory timings are not really relaxed but as we see in HyperPi 32M, achieved time is about as good as that on DDR4-3333 settings.
If anyone is interested then maximum frequency which I was able to reach on this memory is DDR4-3600 at timings similar to presented above DDR4-3466 result but required voltage was already passing 1.5V and it wasn’t fully stable result. However there is a chance that you will be more lucky as Trident Z 2x8GB memory kits are also rated for higher frequencies than DDR4-3200. Of course buying higher frequency memory is already giving you guaranteed settings but you will miss all the fun related to overclocking.
