Verdict and Conclusion
At the rated default speed of DDR4-3000 (1500MHz), the performance of the GEIL Super Luce was very good indeed. I particularly like the blue LED breathing pattern on the memory modules. It’s a perfect match for our MakeMeCooler Doraemon PC build.
GEIL Super Luce memory kits are available in three different LED colors – white, red or blue. So if you don’t fancy full RGB, but want to match the memory modules to your system’s color theme, you have 3 to choose from.
What makes these modules so appealing is GEIL’s patented iLUCE Thermal-beaming Technology, which allow users to observe in real-time, the temperature condition of memory modules through different LED breathing-light tempos, directly from the SUPER LUCE heat-spreader.
There are 6 levels of breathing patterns from a low of 13 beats/min (for low temps) to a high of 200 beats/min (for higher temps). The good news is that the memory modules never run that hot … so I was only able to see Level 2 or 3.
- Level 1 -> <40 ℃: 13 beats/min,
- Level 2 -> 40-45 ℃: 60 beats/min,
- Level 3 -> 45-50 ℃: 80 beats/min,
- Level 4 -> 50-55 ℃: 120 beats/min,
- Level 5 -> >55 ℃: 200 beats/min.
Overclocking was a bit of a fail for us. I was only able to overclock them to 1550MHz (that’s only an extra 50Mhz). It’s our fault or rather, should I say the BIOS on the motherboard. The BIOS on the Gigabyte Z270X Ultra Gaming motherboard really sucks. I wasn’t able to save my memory timings manually, nor was I able select DDR4-3200 or any multiply beyond x31. So I was stuck at DDR4-3100 with auto memory timings of 21-21-21-52, which crippled the overall performance of the system.
Here’s what I say … just select XMP profile in the BIOS and stick with the rated speed of DDR4-3000, and you’ll be fine. It’ll be fast enough as it is, so no need to overclock the memory 😉
Pricewise, the GEIL Super Luce DDR4-3000 can be purchased for around USD $120 from Newegg, which I think is acceptable. You may also want to consider the GEIL EVO X RGB modules, which you can buy at Amazon – https://goo.gl/xL789R
Pros:
- Good performance
- Nice looking heatspeaders
- Available in white, red or blue
- iLuce thermal beaming technology
Cons:
- Not really recommended for overclocking
Final Thoughts
If you looking for DDR4 memory with good performance but don’t fancy full RGB, then why not consider the GEIL Super Luce DDR4-3000 16GB memory kit. It’s available in white, red or blue and comes with iLuce thermal beaming technology… a feature that allow users to monitor the temperature of the memory via 6 levels of breathing patterns.
