Conclusion and Verdict
For most users, we’re used to having 16GB, 32GB or even 64GB memory kits in our system. That’s because the memory capacity and configuration settings are hard coded in the BIOS for most motherboards. However, newer and more recenly released motherboard with newer BIOSes, seem to be able to take the newer 48GB/96GB/192GB memory configuration (this includes previous generation motherboards with new BIOSes too). Could this be the norm going forward? Who knows, only time will tell.
But like I mentioned before, there’s one thing to take into consideration, that is not all motherboards will take higher capacity ram, so be sure to check the QVL list on the motherboard’s website, and also update the BIOS to the latest version. You also need to be aware that some motherboards may not support memory speeds above 8000MT/s… in most cases, 8000MT/s is the maximum that can be stabilized on AMD and Intel motherboards.

On the Gigabyet Z790 AORUS PRO X motherboard, we went in the BIOS and set the memory on AUTO and XMP 3.0 enabled. During our tests, the Patriot Viper Xtreme5 DDR5-8000 MPOWER 48GB memory kits produced excellent scores in all of our benchmarks. In the AIDA64 memory tests, we got a Memory Read speed of 118,190 MB/s, Write speed of 100,787 MB/s and a Copy speed of 102,970 MB/s. These results were amazing and easily one of the fastest memory kits we’ve tested in our labs!
Could these amazing results natively achieved becasue of the fact that they use high-quality SK Hynix memory ICs, which have been specially selected and screened? The answer is probably yes. SK Hynix are known to produce top notch mempry ICs, and they’re found on other brands such as G.Skill and V-Color, which are know to produce extremely fast memory kits.

When your PC is switched off, the memory kits looks great with its aesthetically pleasing silver heatspreaders. But when the PC is powered up, the RGB lighting on the Viper Xtreme 5 MPOWER comes alive and looks absolutely gorgeous. Although you can’t see the LEDs with a naked eye , they are actually located on the top, and this runs along the entire length of the ram modules. It’s compatible with the motherboard’s RGB eco-system such as MSI’s Mystic Light, Asus Aura sync, Gigabyte Fusion and ASRock Polychrome Sync, as well as Patriot’s exclusive Viper RGB app
One thing I really like about these memory kits, is the fact that they work right away without having to change anything in the BIOS. If your motherboard supports higher DDR5 speed of 8000 MT/s or above, just select XMP profile 1 and that’s it.
You can buy the Patriot Viper Gaming Xtreme 5 RGB DDR5-8000 MPOWER Series 48GB Memory Kit for around USD $190 from Amazon – https://amzn.to/4gxaIcC
Final Thoughts
You don’t need a MSI Z790 MPOWER motherboard to take advantage of the Viper Gaming Xtreme 5 RGB DDR5-8000 MPOWER 48GB memory kits. If you have a motherboard that supports higher DDR5 speed of 8000 MT/s or above, then these memory kits not only look aesthetically gorgeous, but also offer blisteringly fast performance.
