Package and its Contents
The Viper Steel RGB 64GB DDR4-3600 kit arrived in retail packaging, a small, flat box. The box is well described, so we clearly know what is inside. Parts of the front are also transparent, so we can see how memory modules look like.
On the box, there is also info about supported RGB technologies and motherboard brands. In short, there are all counting brands on the list, like ASRock, ASUS, MSI, or Gigabyte. In our redaction, we have tested the Steel RGB memory on ASUS and MSI motherboards. In both cases were no issues with stability or compatibility.
The Viper Steel RGB is clearly the best looking Patriot memory kit. We could say it’s not far from the Steel series without RGB, but deep-dark painting with gold Viper Gaming logo and slightly different materials make a huge difference. On the other hand, available memory kits specifications are not as good as that of the Steel or Viper Blackout series. Customers can be confused as with the best looking series usually come top performance or additional features. Here we have great looks and a surprisingly low price. The price makes the Viper Steel RGB memory the least expensive high capacity RGB memory on the market. This fact will be for sure interesting for those who are into PC modding rather than performance tweaking.
Viper Steel RGB offers us various RGB lighting modes supported by all popular motherboard manufacturers. ASUS and MSI software recognizes Patriot memory modules and add them to the managed devices list. This is important as not all, even these popular brands, are fully supported by motherboard software. In this case, I also recommend more ASUS or ASRock motherboards rather than MSI because of better RGB management. On MSI X570 Unify, I had to reinstall the whole motherboard software to adjust RGB settings on the Viper Steel RGB memory. Even then, after the restart, the motherboard sometimes can’t load RGB profiles. Exactly the same is happening on some other memory brands, so it’s not the memory issue but MSI software. However, there is also one good thing. The Viper Steel RGB can synchronize RGB without a “hard reset,” causing whole LEDs to turn off for a second and back to the programmed mode. This is visible with some other memory brands on the MSI X570 Unify motherboard but not with the Viper Steel RGB memory. I will only add that the same issue is not happening on ASUS motherboards, so again, we can blame MSI software.
Our 64GB kit of Patriot Viper Steel RGB looks great. It’s one of the best-looking RGB memory kits on the market, so if you are planning on a full RGB PC, then here is an interesting option that is also inexpensive.
Let’s take a look at the test rig photos.
