As of late memory has been getting cheaper and cheaper. Unfortunately with those cheaper prices the speeds and timings have been getting slower and worse. If you are all for cheaper memory these trends have been to your liking. But for people that want the bleeding edge, things have been pretty lackluster recently.
While not quite as impressive out of the box as the recently reviewed Crucial Ballistix Elite that sported 1866mhz speeds coupled with 9-9-9 timings, Patriot has sent us a set of their own to combat those sticks.
Enter the Patriot Division 2 Viper Xtreme memory sticks. These sticks come at a fast 1866mhz with 9-11-9 timings. While not quite as fast as the Ballistix Elite, they might have overclocking headroom to make up for the laxed timings out of the box.
Recently Patriot has wowed us with the Pyro line of SSD drives, lets take a look and see if the Viper Xtreme memory can perform just as well.
These are 4gb sticks running at 1866mhz with 9-11-9 timings. They will be run on the X79 Sandy Bridge-E platform. But you must be thinking, “isn’t the SB-E meant for quad channel memory?” Yes and no. While it runs at its best with quad-channel memory it will still perform well with dual-channel memory and lets face it, not everyone will run with 4 sticks of memory.
To test these we’ll be using the current Funkykit X79 testing rig:
