Genesis THOR 420 RGB Slim Mechanical Keyboard Review

Closer Look

The Thor 420 RGB keyboard comes in a typical for keyboards, flat box. The package is well described, also as most gaming keyboards on the market. This is actually exactly what we expect as it’s hard to make something really creative and functional at the same time. The most important is the product inside.

Inside the box, except for the keyboard, we will find a short user’s manual. Since it’s a keyboard, then we don’t need any detailed installation manual. What’s the most important is that inside the user’s guide is info on using various shortcuts on the keyboard itself.

The keyboard has flat mechanical keys, which at first sight look quite well. I like the fact they are low profile, so they react faster than tall keys. However, I’m not a fan of flat keys that are causing me to use the wrong button or two at once. This is maybe my personal preference, but the same I sometimes have on laptop keyboards.

One more thing which I could call a disadvantage is the fact that the keyboard is quite loud while typing. I assume it’s less important for gamers as it’s a product more focused on a quick reaction while playing games and won’t be really used for long typing. The same I could say about some higher series HyperX keyboards that were using red mechanical switches. On the other hand, HyperX Alloy Core uses blue mechanical switches and is not as loud during typing. As mentioned in the specifications and features, the Thor 420 RGB uses blue mechanical switches, which I also find the best option for gaming. Still, of course, every gamer has its own preferences, and that’s why we can choose various versions.

The cable of the Thor 420 RGB isn’t braided like some of the higher keyboard series, but it feels and looks durable. I couldn’t check its real durability as it usually shows after longer usage, but the keyboard was in use for 2 weeks and caused no connection problems.

The keyboard is slim and flat, so it takes less space on the desk. It also looks simple but high-end. In real looks somehow better than on the attached photos, so you have to trust me; it actually looks better.

Two feet, let us set one additional angle that isn’t anything special but let’s say just right for most users.

What is for sure unique are shortcuts to set backlight for popular games and genres. On the photos below, you can see that in red what suggests popular key settings for each title. On the keyboard, they’re marked as FPS, CF, COD, LOL, and RACE.

The keyboard was working great in everything during about two-week tests. For me, it’s not the most comfortable keyboard I was using, but one can get used to it, and it has its advantages. I’m sure that other users can say something more about the keyboard itself. Being curious about how others see it, I gave it for a couple of hours to a colleague and my brother. Both couldn’t clearly find any disadvantages.

There are not many flat mechanical gaming keyboards on the market, so I’m sure that gamers searching for one will be satisfied with the Thor 420 RGB.

Above, you can see various RGB modes. Even though they’re not dynamic, then you can imagine all these colors in the move. The keyboard presents well, and if you are more after a business look, you can always use a less bright white backlight.

Genesis Thor 420 RGB is an interesting keyboard that should meet gamers’ expectations, especially those who love RGB lighting and need specifically programmed keys or combos.
