Verdict and Conclusion
This keyboard is steelseries entry into the cheaper mechanical keyboard market. I must say, if you type alot this keyboard is a great purchase. You will type faster within a couple of weeks, and more accurately once you get used to the differences. But that isn’t to say that everything is perfect with this keyboard. I understand that Steelseries is trying to keep costs down, but if this keyboard had optional backlit keys I would pony up and buy it instantly. Too many times I had to turn on a light at night to position my fingers so I could start typing again. If the keys were backlit this thing would be an (almost) perfect keyboard.
For intense gamers who think typing is a waste of their time, I would suggest getting a cheaper keyboard and putting your savings toward a great mouse (Steelseries has many). If you do a combination of typing and gaming this keyboard is a perfect purchase. Gaming with an old IBM keyboard can be a pain in the butt after awhile since the keys are so stiff. But the MX blacks used in this keyboard are great for long gaming sessions, and typing sessions alike(just dont use it when its pitch-black or you will want to game with a light on or have a backlit keyboard).
If you are looking for something that will improve your typing, look no further. The 6G V2 is an absolute monster. It is well built, and everything you could ask for in a basic keyboard. But if you are looking for a flashy keyboard look elsewhere (but it would be nice for steelseries to have the backlit option for practical reasons) since this keyboard sticks to the basics and does them well.
As of writing, the price of this keyboard is around $100USD which isn’t a bad price for what you get. Mechanical switches aren’t cheap and the price reflects that. I must also note, that on the box the keyboard has the full-length shift key. If I got a non-standard model to review I hope that is the case since it would be great if Steelseries offered the keyboard with the full-sized shift key to the consumer market.
Final words. While this keyboard isn’t loaded with tons of bling and shiny features, Steelseries sticks to the basics of what makes a keyboard good to type on. If you can get past the time it takes to get used to the mechanical switches you will find yourself typing faster than you have ever typed on a dome-cap keyboard.
Pros:
- Great to type on
- Construction quality is awesome
- Price is pretty good for what you get.
- MX Blacks are good transition from dome-cap keyboards to mechanical
Cons:
- Half-sized shift key (score should be .5 higher if this is fixed for retail products)
- No backlit keys option
- No REAL frills keyboard
