ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 (Ryzen Threadripper) Motherboard Review

Overclocking

Disclaimer: Overclocking is never guaranteed, so the results may vary depending on certain conditions and various hardware configurations. I am not recommending overclocking if you do not know what are you doing. High voltages may damage your hardware and it will not be covered by warranty.

BIOS Settings

We managed to overclock the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X from the default speed of 3.4GHz to a respectable 4.1GHz. We bumped up the CPU frequency to 4100 MHz and increased the CPU voltage to 1.4V

Idle Temps @ 4.1GHz

Surprisingly, idle temperatures was a low 37 degrees Celsius. I was expecting higher … what hey, what do you expect, the system is running idle.

Load Temps @ 4.1GHz

Temperatures for our overclocked Threadripper reached a high of 73 degrees Celsius. It’s acceptable, but we do highly recommend you use an AIO liquid cooler or a custom loop.

Verdict and Conclusion

Lately, it appears ASRock is focusing more on their Phantom Gaming range of products. These include both their motherboards and graphic cards, which recently has been making a name for itself.

They’ve added a wealth of features that seem to aim at the extreme gaming enthusiasts. Take for example the intelligent Phantom Gaming 2.5Gb/s LAN platform, which is built for maximum networking performance. There’s also dual USB 3.1 gen 2 ports, 3 x Ultra M.2 connectors for SSDs, with 1 featuring a full length heatsink. Not to mention the support for 3-way SLI and Crossfire, Polychrome RGB and Creative Cinema 5 audio.

In our tests, we paired the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 Motherboard along with their Radeon RX 590 graphics card. The overall performance was good, producing some decent scores in all of our benchmark tests. However, to get the best out of your Ryzen Threadripper system, and to get even higher scores, we recommend you get a GeForce GTX or RTX series.

There’s not a lot of headroom when it comes to overclocking a Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. Still, we managed to overclock the 1950X from the default speed of 3.4GHz to a respectable 4.1GHz. We bumped up the CPU frequency to 4100 MHz and increased the CPU voltage to 1.4V

At the time of testing we only could find a Noctua NH-U12S TR4 SP3 Air Cooler. It did its job … but an AIO liquid cooler or a custom loop is highly recommended.

I’ve only tested three X399 motherboard this year … The Asus ROG Zenith Extreme and ASRock’s very own X399 Taichi. Both are very good motherboards and I would recommend both … depending on your budget.

But now there’s the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 Motherboard … this means there’s more choice and we’re finding it hard to choose … hahaha! I suggest you make your choice based on your budget … else, the ASRock X399 Taichi does support 4-way SLI /Crossfire and DDR4-3600+ OC

No price just yet, as it’s just hot off the press, but expect to pay around USD $300+ … For now, you can buy the ASRock X399 Taichi (Ryzen Threadripper) Motherboard from Amazon for around USD $370 – https://amzn.to/2Lar2Ca

Pros:

  • Supports all Ryzen Threadripper CPUs (including newly released 29xx series)
  • Good overclocking ability
  • Supports 3-way SLI and Crossfire
  • Supports DDR4-3400+ OC
  • 3 x M.2 connectors
  • Phantom Gaming 2.5 GB/s LAN
  • Creative Cinema Sounfd5 and Polychome RGB

Cons:

None I can think of …

Final Thoughts

If you’re planning to build a Ryzen Threadripper based system, then check out the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 Motherboard. It’s a feature-packed motherboard and great all-rounder, that offers decent performance with good overclocking ability.
