Verdict and Conclusion
The ASRock X399 Taichi is an excellent motherboard and solid all-rounder. As I’ve predicted, the performance of this motherboard is very good, and there’s very little between the ASRock X399 Taichi and the ROG Zenith Extreme. The scores from our Blender 2 and Cinebench tests show that both were on par with each other.
The question boils down to whether the ASRock X399 Taichi is good enough to prise those hardcore extreme enthusiasts away from the ROG Zenith Extreme?
The answer is basically YES. And here’s the reason why … The ASRock X399 Taichi is currently the MOST affordable X399 based motherboard on the market. No other X399 motherboard can come even close in terms of price. It’s around $100 cheaper than its nearest rival.
Affordability doesn’t mean a lack of features or functionality, quite the opposite. It may not come with all the fancy expansion add-on cards, but it does one thing others don’t … you get 3 x full length M.2 (type 2280) connectors for your SSDs … something that you won’t see on other high-end X399 motherboards.
For the short amount of time I had for overclocking, I could easily get 4.0GHz on my Threadripper 1950X (default is 3.4GHz). Again, due to time limitation, I was a little disappointed not to spend more time oveclocking the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. But if overclocking the Intel 7640X on the X299 Taichi is anything to go by … then I’m sure overclocking the Threadripper 1950X on the ASRock X399 Taichi will be awesome. The ASRock BIOS certainly has all the options you need to achieve a decent overclock on the Threadripper. Some of our members have already achieved an overclock of 4.2GHz or higher, but certainly 4.0Ghz is easily doable.
I couldn’t find anything negative about the ASRock X399 Taichi, and that’s the real truth. It has everything an enthusiast would want on a Threadripper motherboard, at a price that’s affordably attractive.
You can buy the ASRock X399 Taichi Motherboard for only $340 from Amazon – https://amzn.to/2sy72R0, which I think is an excellent bargain. At this price, it offers great value for money with performance and features to match. Now you will be able spend the savings towards a higher-end Threadripper processor or even towards a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.
