Verdict and Conclusion
If there was an enthusiast motherboard that just works … this is it. After installing the Intel Core i9-13900K, DDR5-6200 ram, GeForce RTX 3090 and the rest of the components … all I did was enable XMP in the BIOS and left everything at default. The system booted up first time with no issues whatsoever. Take note Asus … if you guys can do it with this motherboard, I’m sure you can do it with your ROG Crosshair X670E Hero 😉
All said and done, the ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming WiFi is a probably one of my favourite motherboard based on the Z790 chipset. It offers a ton of enthusiast features with good performance to match.
It features an impressive 18+1 power stages that’s rated up to 90A each, delivering ample current to power the Intel 13th Gen Core -9-13900K processors with ease. It supports next-gen graphics cards with 1 x PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, and you also get 2 additional PCIe 4.0 x16 slots (support x4 mode), and 1 x PCIe 3.0 x1 slot for expansion.
As far as storage is concerned, there’s plenty. You get 4 SATA ports, 1 x PCIe 5.0 Gen5, and 4 x PCIe Gen4 M.2 slots. It’s more than enough for most gamers and content creators alike.
What I find most impressive, is the unquestionable supports for XMP profiles for DDR5 ram. Right of the box, it ran our Patriot Viper Gaming Venom RGB DDR5-6200 at full speed with XMP enabled. I can’t explain the relief and joy when this happens.
As I mentioned before, the motherboard comes with a load of enthusiast features. These include the diagnostic LEDs, onboard power-on button, ASUS Aura lighting on the I/O hood, VRM heatsink array with built-in heatpipe, PCIE slot Q-Release, M.2 Q-latch, BIOS Flashback and Clear CMOS button.
I particularly like the PCIE slot Q-Release, M.2 Q-latch, which allows for hassle-free and easy intallation of the graphics card and M.2 SSDs.
During our tests, we used an Intel 13th Gen Core i9-13900K processor and a GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card. We managed to get some amazing scores in all of our benchmarks, including a Cinebench R23 scores of 36,682 (multi core) and 2,260 (single core). For PCMark 10, we got a score of 9,893, and a score of 11,881 for PassMark9.
For UL’s latest Procyon Photo Editing Benchmark, we got a score of 11,189 and 9,040 for the video editing suite. For 3DMark Speed Way and Port Royal, we got a score of 5,139 and 12,816 respectively. And finally, for Timespy and Firestrike, we got decent scores of 19,409 and 39,023 respectively.
For LAN connectivity, you get both the Intel 2.5G LAN as well as the WiFi 6E + Bluetooth, and should satisfy most gamers, content creators or streamers.
Other attractive features include the SupremeFX audio, Aura lighting, USB 4 support, a total of 21 USB ports, and an array of gold-plated audio jacks.
