ASRock Steel Legend SL-850G 850W Power Supply Review

Did you know ASRock makes power supplies? Well let me introduce the ASRock Steel Legend SL-850G PSU. It’s fully modular power supply that’s certified 80 PLUS® GOLD, and comes with Cybenetics PLATINUM and LAMBDA A+ ratings, as well as supporting the latest ATX3.1 & PCIe5.1 standards.

It uses 100% Highly Reliable Japanese Capacitors for superior power efficiency, and features a powerful +12V single rail @ 70.9A, giving you a total power output of up to 850W.

For cooling, it comes with a 135mm striped axial FDB fan, and features ASRock’s iCool Intelligent Fan Control Mode for low noise operation. You also get a native 12V-2×6 Connector with a Dual Color Design and a Built-in 5V BOOST function.

It also offers the usual protection such as OVP (Over Voltage), UVP (Under Voltage), SCP (Short Circuit),OTP (Over Temp) and OPP (Over Power), plus it comes with a remarkable 10-Year warranty for peace of mind.

Interestingly, the SL-850G power supply is certified Cybenetics PLATINUM with LAMBDA A+ ratings. You’re probably asking what is this? Well, it’s a recognised certification for power supplies that high-light performance, build quality, reliability and noise level. For more information about Cybernetics and LAMBDA go here.

This is ASRock’s first attempt in making power supplies for the mass market, so it will be interesting to see how good they really are. When it comes to power supplies, the most important thing for users is stability and power efficiency, and you can only achieve that with high quality components and adequate cooling. From what I can see, it appears that the SL-850G has what it takes to deliver the above.

I would like to thank ASRock for providing the review sample. This is a snippet from what ASRock has to say about themselves on their website:

ASRock Inc. is established in 2002, specialized in the field of motherboards. ASRock strives to build up its own brand. With the 3C design concept, “Creativity, Consideration, Cost-effectiveness”, the company explores the limit of motherboards manufacturing while paying attention on the eco issue at the same time, developing products with the consideration of eco-friendly concept.

ASRock has been growing fast and become world third largest motherboard brand with headquarter in Taipei, Taiwan and branches in Europe and the USA. The young and vibrant company targets from mainstream to enthusiast MB segments for different kinds of users, owning reputation around the world market with its reliability and proficiency.

To test the power supply, we’ll be using our usual test rig which is comprised of an Intel Core i9-14900K processor, which has a massive Turbo Boost TDP of 253W+ at full load. We’ll also be using an Asus Z790 Strix motherboard, 32GB of DDR5-7400 ram, a Crucial T700 1TB PCIE Gen5 SSD, and a powerful GeForce RTX 4080 Super. For cooling, we’ll using a Thermaltake ToughLiquid Ultra 360 AIO cooler mounted with 3 x Corsair iCUE Link RX120 RGB cooling fans.
