Conclusion and Verdict
A few years ago, a 750W-850W power supply would have been more than enough, to power most high-end gaming systems. But with today’s power hungry CPUs and GPUs, I would highly recommend a 1000W PSU or higher. In any case, just make sure you are able to meet the power requirements of your system when getting a new power supply.
When it comes to power supply it’s important to have stability at full load. And I’ve said many times … having a stable +12V line is the key.
During our tests, we used an Intel Core i9-13900K which has a default TDP of 125W (and a whopping 240-250W during Turbo boost), along with a GeForce RTX 3090 (TBP of 350W approx.). The total power consumption at full load, was well over 600W just for these two components.
From our full load tests, all three voltage lines dropped, albeit ever so slightly. The +12V line dropped to 11.904V, while the +5V line dropped to 4.960V, and lastly for the +3.3V line, it dropped to 3.312V from 3.328V. These drops are very minute, so I’m not too worried. In the end, I’m more than happy to say that this power supply, should be able to handle most high-end components at full load.
