Verdict and Conclusion
Here we have it, the last page! Time to start summarizing the previous pages.
The regulation performance of this PSU is quite good, though a bit short of the “excellent” bar. That bar is hung awfully high up these days though, not that long ago this regulation would have been excellent. Times change though, and now ~1.3% is only “very, very good”.
The ripple performance on the other hand IS excellent, it’s the lowest DC-DC ripple I’ve come across and one of the lowest 12V ripple units as well. Fantastic, really.
The shortage of transient filter, on the other hand, is frustrating. This is a high end unit that brags about radiation filtering, it should not have parts left out of the EMI filter!
Cost wise, things go a bit pear shaped. At a current price of $171 online this is one of the most expensive 600w PSUs available. At the (out of stock) Newegg price of $190, it is THE most expensive 600w PSU to be found. All that, and it has the EMI filter of a budget unit? Now to be fair, performance costs money and we DID get a lot of very nice performance out of this unit, plus an extremely quiet (and therefor likely expensive) fan, but I’d like to see the extra buck spent on the EMI filter. Maybe some cleaner soldering, too.
The soldering is meh, it’s functional, but ugly. Nothing that will cause a failure or a dangerous situation, but less care was used than could have been in my opinion.
The looks of the unit are quite good, assuming you like colors in your sleeving. If you don’t, you’re in trouble. I rather like it.
The fan is QUIET. I couldn’t hear the thing at all through normal testing, and it was very quiet even at 43°C intake temperatures. If you’re into quiet PSUs/computers, this PSU has your name written all over it. Assuming your name is “Platimax”, I guess.
Let’s condense this summary even further and make some bullet points out of it.
There are pros:
- Extremely quiet at all load levels and temperatures (like, wow).
- Good connector selection.
- Fantastic ripple control.
- Very good regulation.
- I like the looks.
There are cons too however:
- EMI filter is a bit lacking.
- High price is, indeed, high.
- Soldering could be neater.
Final Words. All told this is an excellent unit with fairly small shortcomings, the combination of cost cutting on the EMI filter and a high price offends me and forces me to hack some off the final rating, but don’t let it discourage you from choosing this PSU if it looks like what you want. The performance is nothing short of excellent. At the bottom line (almost) I give the Enermax Platimax 600w a rating of 8.9/10. If you’re in the market for a ~600w 80+ Platinum PSU, give the Platimax strong consideration!
