Conclusion and Verdict
If you’re looking for a technically in-depth review, you won’t find it here. As I explained before, this review is more about the power supply’s features, with simple voltage and power consumption reading during idle and at full load.
The main thing to watch out for, is the fluctuation on the +12V line. If the +12V line drops to below 11.5V during full load … then you’ve got trouble. The system may unstable and you might also get random reboots.
From our tests, the idle voltage readings taken from AIDA64 and HWinfo64 showed that the Thermaltake Smart Pro RGB 850W was rock solid. The +12V line was between 12.408 – 12.355V, while the +5V and +3V line was at 5.136V and 3.344V respectively.
With overclocked Broadwell at full load, it maintained its rock solid stability with the +12V rail at 12.250V, dropping only -0.105V. The +5V and +3V lines was also solid, dropping only -0.048V respectively.
The overall build quality of the Thermaltake Smart Pro RGB is very good. Equipped with a powerful single +12V rail at 70.5A and high quality Japanese capacitors, you’ll be sure to get stability and less fluctuations. The 80 Plus Bronze certification is good to have, providing you with 85% efficiency.
The RGB lighting from the PSU’s Riing fan may not suit for everyone’s tastes, which is why Thermaltake included a physical switch that you can manually turn the RGB lighting on/off.
Finally, the Smart Zero Fan is a great added bonus for gamers and power users alike. It allows silent operation when switched off. Switching it on, will mean that the fan will not operate when the PSU is at low load.
Pricewise, the Thermaltake Smart Pro RGB 850W is available from Amazon for only USD $99.00, which I think is excellent value, and makes it one of the most affordable 850W power supply on the market. Buy now at Amazon – https://goo.gl/Xp0wXM
