Conclusion and Verdict
Not so long ago, I would have said a 750W-850W PSU would be more than enough for most users. But with today’s power hungry CPUs and GPUs, I would definitely recommend a 1000W PSU or higher. If you’re planning to build a new system with latest processor and graphics card, make sure you get yourself a power supply that can meet the power requirements of your system.
During our tests, we used Intel’s latest 13th Gen Core i9-13900K which has a default TDP of 125W (and a 300W+ during Turbo boost), along with a beefy GeForce RTX 3090 (TBP of 350W), the total power consumption was well over 700W just for these two components. And I’m glad to say the Thermaltake TOUGHPOWER GF3 1000W Gold Power Supply can hand it with no problems at all.
If you’re after a power supply with RGB illumination, then this PSU isn’t for you. There’s no RGB lighting on the power supply, but it does come with a massive 10-year warranty, 80 Plus Gold certification, Smart zero-fan mode, flat modular cables and uses high quality 100% Japanese capacitors.
As I mentioned earlier, during our tests the AIDA64 and HWMonitor software was not able to detect the sensors on the new ASRock Z790 Taichi motherboard, so we were unable to get the readings for +12V, +5V and +3.3V properly. We may have to wait for an update for AIDA64/HW Monitor and come back on this. But I’m sure these voltage readings won’t disappoint.
In any case, I’m more than happy to say that this power supply should be able to handle everything you throw at it, inculding of course all the next-gen graphics card that uses the latest PCIE 5.0 16-Pin connector.
There is only one concern which I might be worried about, and that is the included PCIe 5.0 cable featuring the new 16-pin connectors for next-gen graphics cards. It’s labelled 450W, which I’m not sure has any significance? Does it mean this power supply can only handle GPUs with a power consumption of up to 450W? Once we get our hands on the RTX 40 series graohics card, we will let you know for sure!
